âGET OVER HERE, puta, and open the fucking safe.â
Finn hesitated, then walked into the office and crouched down in front of the safe, thinking. Maybe he could pretend he forgot the combination. Then what? He knew Oscar wouldnât buy that and would probably just shoot him in the back.
âHurry up.â
The gun dug into his spine. Finn touched the dial and spun. Slowly. Slowly. Think, think.
âFaster, esé.â
Finn spun the dial to the number three, then waited. The gun jabbed harder into his spine causing him to flinch.
âDonât fuck around, man.â
âMr. Roose?â
Finn turned to see Tomasâ hulking frame standing in the doorway. Confusion clouded his bartenderâs angular features as he looked from Oscar to Finn, back to Oscar. He must have seen the gun then because his eyes widened. Without hesitation, Tomas tackled Oscar to the floor, grabbing for the gun. They both slammed into Finn.
Finn scuttled underneath the desk like a frightened mouse. He cowered there, watching Tomas and Oscar wrestling. Hard to tell what was going on or whose hands were gripping the gun. He grabbed his leather office chair that was rolling around in front of him to shield himself.
There was a loud bang! and something whizzed by Finnâs right ear. He saw a small tuft of stuffing protruding from the back of the chair. Someone had shot through it. He turned to see a bullet lodged in the wall.
Another loud bang! and Finn turned to see Oscar lying still on the floor and Tomas holding the gun over him.
âI hated that guy,â Tomas said.
Finn swallowed, wondering if he could just stay underneath the desk for the rest of his life. There was a strange whimpering sound and he realized it was coming from him.
Tomas peered underneath the desk at Finn.
âYou come out now. Itâs okay. Heâs dead.â His voice was devoid of emotion as usual.
Even when heâs shooting people, he sounds like a robot. Unbelievable.
Finn scooted the chair forward and crawled out from underneath the desk warily. His ears were still ringing from the gunshots. Finn sucked in his breath when he saw Oscar lying in front of him. His eyes bulged out of his face, and his mouth was hanging open like he was in mid-scream. Dark liquid that Finn presumed was blood oozed out of a small hole in the middle of his forehead.
âShit,â Finn whispered. He felt like he was going to puke and realized he was trembling. It was the first time heâd seen a dead body. He never wanted to be this close to one ever again. He wrinkled his nose. âFuck, whatâs that smell?â
Tomas was busy with his cell phone, seeming oblivious to the fact that heâd just shot someone. âRelease of the bowels,â he said in his monotone.
âEw.â Finn leaped up and scrambled out of the office into the hallway. His heart seemed to be beating out of his chest and he took a deep breath, struggling to calm down. He noticed Tomas had picked up the cell phone lying on his desk, the one with the skull case.
